April 2019 – Golden Milk Recipe

Golden milk is a wonderfully healthy and medicinal drink to have. I like to drink mine towards the end of the evening just before bedtime with a good book to read. The drink helps to aid a restful nights sleep.

The star ingredient is Turmeric. This golden spice, with its earthTurmeric Golden Milky taste with a hint of spice, dates a thousand years, and is most commonly used in Indian cuisine. It contains 3% of curcumin, identified as a primary component known as a polyphenol (known to have up to 600 health benefits). The main recipe contains turmeric and black pepper in the form of a paste and you may add anything you like to enhance your taste buds. I like to add fresh grated root ginger, Organic virgin coconut oil, Cinnamon powder and finally three drops of cayenne liquid pepper (for a healthy heart) and for that extra zing, for I like to live life to the full!

Turmeric is an ancient Ayurvedic treatment for digestive disorders and various joint issues such as Arthritis, Fibromyalgia and Osteoarthritis for the curcumin contains anti- inflammatory and antioxidant properties. There is so much information on the internet these days about this amazing spice and why it is incorporated into a golden liquid drink. My own personal interest taking Turmeric on a daily basis is because it also acts as a liver detoxifier. Our liver is the cart-horse of all our organs and, one of its many jobs is to filtrate, flush and to clean the body of toxins.

And now for the recipe…………..

Firstly, make the turmeric paste. It is quite simple to make and it lasts in the fridge for up to six weeks. You can also incorporate it to other recipes too.

  • Cup turmeric powder
  • ground black pepper
  • Filtered water

NB By adding black pepper to your paste increases your body’s absorption of turmeric by 200%

Mix all dry ingredients into a stainless steel saucepan. (I like stainless steel for it does not stain and, it does not release toxins into your food).

Add the water and stir. Place on a low heat and keep stirring. Remain with the paste as it turns very quickly. If it is too thick then add a little more water. Cook for 3-5 minutes and allow to cool.
When ready, place into a glass container with a lid. Et voila! That’s the messy bit done. Now for the Golden Milk.

Measurements to suit your taste you may want more or less. This is a conservative guideline as a first attempt.

  • A cup or mug of milk (Cows, rice, almond, goats, soy – any combination you like)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric paste
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon organic coconut oil
  • Some grated fresh root ginger (go steady it can be strong).
  • 1/2 tsp manuka honey (I like to use factor 12+)

As I said you may wish to add anything you like. I also add 3 drops of cayenne pepper liquid (your heart will love it).

Add everything together (except the honey) and give it a good old stir. Place on a medium heat continue to mix until the milk is to your temperature. The colour is amazing and at this point your taste buds will be getting just as excited as you will be. Just before drinking, add the honey, give it a stir and lick the teaspoon (because you have to!).

Relax and enjoy Nature’s medicinal drink: it is simply love in a cup.
